Short Documentary Film
A brewer runs a brewery in the mountains of Nagano and a pub in town. In his first year of running the brewery at the time of filming, he seeks to make beer that grows out of his own life. He delivers it in kegs to the town and in bottles to the countryside. Each bottle holds 530 ml, a size chosen for two people to share.
The Japanese word wakeru can mean both to divide and to share. Mountains and town, kegs and bottles. The film follows the lines he draws through his life and work, tracing how they reveal him, the land and farmers that provide water and ingredients, and the people who drink together.
Directed, filmed and edited by Takashi Inui. Filmed by Inui alone and without voice-over narration, the work is shaped by time spent brewing and making deliveries, journeys to springs and fields, and the brewer’s own words.
